HIT THE HIGHWAY -- BUT I CAN'T
- Are You Avoiding Properly?
The other day I received an e-mail from a new owner of a 2475LT who said he had been trying to contact Garmin with
a problem and was put on hold for very extended periods of time which prevented him from getting a timely answer and was wondering if
I could help him out with his problem.
He complained that his new GPS wouldn't guide him via highways ....
Already, if you have been a GPS owner for a length of time, you have a POSSIBLE answer --- and that
might be ...
AVOIDANCES.
I don't own his unit, but on my 3790LMT I can make a variety
of preference choices. From the main page I would follow this path (your exact path, depending upon the unit you
use, may differ slightly.):
Tools > Settings > Navigation > Automobile > Nuroute > Avoidances
There I will find a menu that includes
U-Turns
Highways
Toll Roads
Traffic
Ferries
Carpool Lanes
Unpaved Roads
By checking any of these choices you can tell your GPS to AVOID the item.
Perhaps the fellow had 'Highways' checked and his GPS would then calculate his routes NOT USING HIGHWAYS. I would leave that selection -- unchecked.
Let's look at a couple of others. Many keep 'Unpaved
Roads' and 'Carpool Lanes' (if they are
driving alone) checked.
I keep 'Traffic' checked as my unit has traffic capability and I live in an area where the
traffic reporting system is quick and accurate (at least in my experience), the greater Washington, D.C. area.
My unit then really helps me to AVOID traffic congestion and accidents and automatically guides me around
problems. It has saved me many times from being caught for hours in a traffic situation.
U-Turns are interesting. I keep mine un-checked. I know that some like to keep theirs checked. My thinking is that
by not permitting U-Turns, where possible, you may be guided way off course in order to return to the route. But
there is another reason I keep it un-checked. In some cities, New Orleans LA -- as a prime example, U-Turns are
required for making some left-hand turns and you wouldn't
want to prevent your unit from routing the
U-Turn in these cases.
As far as Toll Roads are concerned, that is going to be up to you. I personally wouldn't drive from Washington DC to
New York City without using a Toll Road (Pay Turnpike). But I do check it when I am in the
Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area to avoid the Florida Turnpike as I have found excellent and adequate city streets to
take me to my destinations without using the pay Turnpike.
In my area there is only one Ferry within 100 miles and
I haven't been in that direction in years. But depending upon your area, you may want to check it or keep it un-checked.
I certainly hope that by now the fellow's GPS is allowing him on the Highway.
Also, you should be aware that some of the choices are also effected by another menu -- Calculation Mode.
Tools > Settings > Navigation >
Automobile > Nuroute > Calculation Mode
Single choices there are:
Faster Time
Shorter Distance
Less Fuel
Prompted
Off Road
Which choice made there can have a direct effect on items of the previous menu. I opt for 'Faster Time.'
